Re: Bass-ackwards or Group Schizophrenia?

I get the fussiness, but this makes sense as it stands. The legislators are behaving in a bipartisan manner, open to working with the other side; therefore, the legislators are bipartisan. No?

Re: Reprise

I think the re-prize v repr-ease pronunciation mistake probably comes from the word reprisal. I sure don't say the musical term easily.

Re: Mittyesque

Dictionary.com goes with a simpler "Walter Mittyish."

Are you sure about the Tom Hanks version? I found a Ben Stiller one from 2013, but no Hanks. Danny Kaye's was in 1947, but the way.

It's also been the title of about 8 different TV show episodes. Popular idea.

Re: Trap

I guess I wasn't clear in my wondering; the trap I had in mind was the kind you trip. I guess you can trip up and down stairs, which could make them a dangerous trap for the clumsy, but how did something that means staircase come to mean the ловушка (lovushka) you fall into?

Re: Trap

Because they have a stepped appearance, these volcanic outcroppings were called such: traps. Now, how we got from trap to staircase, or from staircase to trap, I don't quite follow.

Abject/Abjection

I decided on this one because of what I consider an error in a piece on Slate.com. The author wrote of "object horrors", not abject, which is what I would expect in that phrase. I doubted myself, though, so I looked it up and found that it's even more complicated than I thought, so I figured I'd tos...

Re: Mattress

I wonder where 'gabion' came from?

According to dictionary.com: 1570–80; <Middle French: rough, two-handled basket <Italian gabbione, augmentative of gabbia cage <Latin cavea cavity, cage

It's also pronounced [ gey-bee-uhn ], which isn't what I was going to go with at first.

This is now a topical word, as a new covid-19 vaccine is coming out that makes use of them.

Here's an article about them in general: https://www.news-medical.net/life-scien ... %20antigen.

Re: placate

I pronounce the first 'a' in both placate and placatory as a schwa. As in abate and narrate.
Interesting; I pronounce the first a of Abate and nArrate differently.

I would expect that, like all such words used to speak of "semis" and "others", yes, it is meant to be derogatory. Is it used anywhere now?
