wonky

This is my new favorite word. But every time I use it, someone repeats it back to me, "Wonky?" Dictionary.com won·ky –adjective, -ki·er, -ki·est. 1. British Slang . a. shaky, groggy, or unsteady. b. unreliable; not trustworthy. 2. Slang . stupid; boring; unattractive. Origin: 1920–25; perh. var. of ...

Manumit

This word came to me from the story of Robert Carter III , who is said to have had the "largest known manumission in the United States." Looking up the word " manumission " only gives "the act of manumitting". Manumit –verb (used with object), -mit·ted, -mit·ting. to release from slavery or servitud...

Community

I particularly liked the word history of this word. Would that its definition were more true; it seems altruistic to me. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/community com·mu·ni·ty –noun,plural-ties. 1. a social group of any size whose members reside in a specific locality, share government, and o...

Berm

Struck me as a funny little word. berm –noun 1. Also, berme. Fortification. a horizontal surface between the exterior slope of a rampart and the moat. 2. Also called bench. any level strip of ground at the summit or sides, or along the base, of a slope. 3. Also called backshore, beach berm. a nearly...

The popular term among young "housewives" with children is "stay-at-home mom." I'm not sure what the non-moms call themselves.
I like the term "non-mom" myself. I, however, having 1 child, am a mom.

Housewife is sometimes pejorative in some circles with
politically-correct-speak: now being "Homemanager"
or some odd thing.

I never heard this word in a positive light. It has always seemed to have negative connotations in our family. As to "housewife" that is definitely a positive!

MUCK

I heard this word on TV and it had me wondering about its origin. muck (n.) c.1250, "cow dung and vegetable matter spread as manure," from O.N. myki, mykr "cow dung," from P.Gmc. *muk-, *meuk- "soft." Meaning "unclean matter generally" is from c.1300. The verb meaning "to make dirty" is from 1832; i...

And I was just reading your post of years ago. I too find myself correcting spelling, especially. I enjoy watching the banner across the bottom of News programs. All the mis-spellings there are enough to gag a real lover of words. In books - which I venerate with great awe - I will still correct in...
