On that line, I just received an email from audio software guru brand Roxio which reads "Share you family's favorite summer stories..." Needless to say, they have sent that out to their entire email list!

I was just thinking that would be the best case scenario - a sign saying the sign has known errors. Fat chance they'd do it.

As long as we can put down the mindless apostrophe's  we have a chance. Which reminds me of the 2 guys who were arrested and forbidden to ever enter a national park again, for correcting an apostrophe on a historic sign at the Grand Canyon. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,409382,00.html?s...

I can understand that. It drives me nutty. My first full time job was as a proofreader. It was all I did all day every day. Ever since then, it became a habit I just cannot break. I have done it so much now, that is part of my current job as well (amongst other things).

A Proofreader's Nightmare

http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1832104,00.html?xid=newsletter-weekly The above article from Time magazine, entitled "Making an Arguement for Misspelling" (nevermind that there is an 'e' in the word argument) makes my skin crawl. The thought of so many variant spellings for the same w...

Great word! I am all for putting down those "other" words, and am adding Fie! to my vocabulary. :D On 2nd thought, the phrase from "Jack and the Beanstalk" comes to mind, "Fee! Fie! Fo! Fum!". Now that "fie" is explained I am wondering about the other 3! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_and_the_Bea...

Thanks, Good Dr., for putting this word in the daily email! I kept looking for it to show up in the Good Word Discussion forum, just so I could point out you misspelled my name! It's S-u-Z-a-n-n-e. :) But no harm done!

All explained rather elgantly (if I do say so myself) in the Glossary of Quaint Southernisms.
So it is! And btw, you are right. I am one of those rare true Floridians.

That's true, but we do have "maters", "taters", and relatives named "Hular" [Hool-er] and "Thelmar" [Thel-mer].

Holler

My mother uses this word a lot and being "born and raised" within 1 mile of where I live now in Florida, I have heard it a lot. Imagine my surprise when I found it in the dictionary. hol·ler1 –verb (used without object) 1. to cry aloud; shout; yell: Quit hollering into the phone. –verb (used with ob...
