Re: Fascism

In fact, what you described is the very argument that our "founding fathers" took to heart when they drafted the Constitution. Their answer was the Electoral College. The U.S. has never been a democracy, it is a republic. But more importantly, we have never admitted that it is not democratic in elec...

Re: chatteration

How lovely! What a wonderful place to put it, and a wonderful way to live.
Thanks for the description, Luke-- the "video", in fact, as it came as much more than a "picture".

chatteration

I don't know how I never ran across this before, but thought it too wonderful not to share.

"A chatteration of birdsong..."

Lovely, no?

Re: Cipher

What am I missing here?
How did we get from cipher and null to chevron and goat?
Maybe code and goat? Code being what goat sounds like when spoken by someone with a heavy head code?

Re: fascism

BNJ, Thank you so very much! Those were the ideas that fascism bundled together in my head. Seeing them put down as official simply reinforces my confusion. I understand that fear is a mighty emotion, capable of causing mighty reactions, but why anyone would voluntarily sign up for fascism under any...

Re: Globaloney

I always thought it was the way baloney looked/is made of.
A hodgepodge of ingredients blended to the point of unrecognizability.

P.S. why is that last word not recognized as properly spelled?

Re: Pendent

It strikes me, David, that most all the world has taken up position next to "our friend Damocles".
sigh.

Re: Misgender

tkowal, while old habits are hard to break, they certain can be broken. I think it a matter of choice. While I would find it difficult to maintain a constant awareness, and as my short-term memory problems are clearly increasing, I would still make the effort, out of politeness, to accommodate someo...

Re: Misgender

tkowal,
in re: "... the second one wears a black hat and the first one wears a brown one ..."
Would "...the latter wears a black hat and the former a brown one...",
an older literary construct seldom used in common speech, create a more pleasant look to your eye?

Re: Misgender

May I ask that you explicate your declaration that W.C. was the greatest man of the century? Greatest wordsmith I would immediately concur... but greatest man? That's a bit more complicated, isn't it? Each of us humans has their own foibles, but few have positions that allow those foibles to do grea...

Re: Misgender

"If the KJV was good enough for Peter and Paul..." Philip, your wicked sense of humor shines again Iain, thanks for the link about Lowth, had not heard of him. He must have had some powerful position to impose so much on so many. I admire even more the Dutch system of re-examining and re-forming the...

Re: Kidology

ahh, Philip! Your large vocabulary at work again!
I use it -just kidding- often.

Maybe that puts us at a verbal draw...
