Re: Infantry

"The Latin infans (infant- with endings) was a derivation from in- "not" + fan(t)s "speaking"..." And was that word used to refer to the soldiers? If so, then do you mean that this implies "For those of you who doubt that humans are distinguished from other species by speech, harken: even the ancest...

Re: Misgender

You left out one pronoun. There are people who prefer to use "they" in reference to themselves to avoid the he/she system altogether. It is hard to use "they is" or even "they are" but eventually I suppose we CAN get used to most anything, if we try.

Thanks to all!

This is why English is such a fascinating and fun language for native speakers and often a horrifying and exhausting trial for those trying to learn it!

Re: Mother

Thank you, Iain, for getting out the answer to Luke while I whiled away the day.
The sun has just come out, though we're supposed to be raining still, but at least the sky is still clouded.
Maybe I'll have to be a bit less vinagery for the rest of the day.

And don't forget the mother at the bottom of the vinegar bottle. I especially resonate with that usage.

Re: Hobby

WOW! That's FABULOUS! Thanks for spending so much time on that! I'm copying all that to send on to the friend, and reserve for my own perusing later as the details fade (short term memory deficit) and to be sure to have access to the links. Thanks to you, too, Good Doctor. That's another link I shal...

Re: Hobby

The modern word for horse in German is Pferd. There is an older word-- Ros (I think older, was told it is not used much now but remains in old names. For example, a friend's name is Rosberg--horse mountain). I have no idea how to find out anything about the etymology of words in English, let alone G...

Thanks for that wonderful picture! There was a company in the town I used to live in that had several very successful Chinese restaurants called China House. The bought a white van to use for deliveries and such. On the doors, they had painted: C.H.Inc. I didn't know anyone in the company to talk to...

Re: hypercranialoquy

When looking at the word before reading the definition, I took the first two syllables as meaning "hyper "overwrought, excited" " so, I thought the word very applicable to the overwrought dialogs taking place in my cranium. Seems the longer I sit by myself, the louder and more agitated the colloquy....
