Sentences sentenced to head-on collisions

I've brought this up before but as an observation that I'd like to turn into a suggestion: I'd like to be able to double-space after a sentence. I kind of resent having everything closed up and standardized to one space, such as the one that won't show up here>. The site is pretty good about allowin...

Well the early report on Damp Squid is not great. After about a third through the book it's fairly good insomnia medicine but not worth much else. Seems to be written on too much an beginner level with its "what is a word" elementals. Maybe good for somebody looking into English for the first time b...

Saparris, your entries thus far have been at least to these eyes thoughtful, well-conceived and entirely enriching, so perish the thought. Intermemberial greetings have been a time-honoured tradition here, and without the jolly quips, puns and light cuts, it would be a dull place to be indeed. Nor h...

They didn't.
That's the whole point!

No, Lupercalia involved neither spouses nor prostitutional transactions. It was simply a social event with romantical connotations that were in their time more ...fundamental (direct) than they are today. More a fertility rite, and also tying in a sort of game of chance.

Much better. More on this in Lupercalia Incidentally, this forum isn't for GoodWord Suggestions, but for discussions of the GW of the Day, where Doc usually posts the original. But somehow, today's Valentine entry was not posted this year. So here's the older post , with attendant commentary for th...

I'll have to think about that. I'm not sure I give a handful for the difference beween a thread and a chatroom. Virtually every topic I've seen here is off target by the fourth or fifth post, even among the many, many threads in which I have not taken an active role. Most participants seem to be en...

Actually the only name who "went away" at the time was BD himself, shortly after that single comment. The threads went on thrivingly and didn't stop at all. Until recently. I'm not sure how starkly this really needs to be spelled out, but would just note two things: (1) , have a look at the thread i...

Very cool suggestion for WotD. I didn't know this was an actual word; I'd thought it was a scat: To say she is his mother is an utter bit of folly! (Oh, fie! our Strephon's not a rogue!) Perhaps his brain is addled, and it's very melancholy! (Taradiddle, taradiddle, tol lol lay!) I wouldn't say a wo...

To clarify what I'm sure you mean, Slava, it's really not a matter of enthusiasm, but the simple discretion of --and there's no other way to put this-- actually having something to say before opening the dialogue box. This is the value of a site dedicated to a specific interest-- it demands that one...

Chaos II

I've found myself (as I suspect many have), recalling the concerns of Brazilian Dude just before he discontinued his erudite commentary here. At the time I thought BD was being a bit sensitive, as our diversions at that time were at least on the original subjects. And maybe the perspective is relati...

Re: haywire

I used this word in a blog post complaining about the operating system on my "new" media player (Archos 605 Wifi 160GB) and it occurred to me that non-Americans may have little idea what it means... Those of us who have worked with Archos equipment over the years know too well what it means, and ha...
