Glossology

A fancy term for linguistics. Probably not all that great a Goodword, but I thought I'd toss it out there as a spare.

It also lets me put in the much deeper study of language, glossonomia. Here's a defunct site named Glossonomia, that some may find of interest.

Re: Chary

Slava, for me "cherry" and "chary" are homophones and both rhyme with "carry." They are respectively "cheree," "cheree" and "keree." Interesting. I don't think I've ever come across cherry that didn't rhyme with berry, or bury. Then again,...

Re: Chary

Personally, I've always pronounced this as a rhyme to carry, not cherry.

Re: Ait

Well, this is rather interesting. Ait comes from a root that meant water. So how the heck did it come to mean land? Wild.

My spellcheck doesn't like the word, by the way. I've had to add it. I guess the compilers don't use crossword puzzle dictionaries.

Thanks for clearing that up. That's what I thought it was, but wasn't sure if it was intentional. It is.

Re: Inveigh

Interestingly enough, even though they share the same first 6 letters, inveigh and inveigle have different roots. Inveigh is above, inveigle below: formerly also enveigle, etc., late 15c., "to blind (someone's) judgment," apparently an alteration of Middle French aveugler "delude, mak...

Re: Quincunx

Imagine the 5-spot above as being 5 circles, touching the edge of the center one. That was a design I saw that was the "bars" over a window. Oddly, though, this was on the 8th floor of a 14-story apartment building.

We could use it for dietary purposes, as in the FDA Food Ziggurat.

I bet M. C. Escher could have had fun with drawing them.

As they say, just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you.

Re: Limbo

Well, as long as we're guessing about the dance, I'll toss out what crossed my mind, feeble as it is, while reading this.

If limbo #1 is a form of suspension, and you have to suspend the top half or more of your body to do the limbo, why not say the two words are related? :?

This does not bode well for Dostoevsky, does it? His first name is Fedor/Федор.
