Re: Pudding

I guess it is not related to puddle: n. early 14c., "small pool of dirty water," frequentative or diminutive of Old English pudd "ditch," related to German pudeln "to splash in water" (cf. poodle ). Originally used of pools and ponds as well. v. "to dabble in water...

New Phobia

I recently learned of a new phobia, ochrephobia.

It's the fear of being covered in gold paint. A form of gilt complex.

Re: Amblyopia

This was a theme word in "Peanuts" for a while. Linus had to wear a patch to correct it.

A completely loyal underling. Does it carry negative connotations, like myrmidon? I'm thinking it could be used for people who support an unsupportable leader. Thoughts? :?:

Concupiscent

In today's lusty times, perhaps this is a good one to use more often?

Plus, I only just learned that I have always pronounced it incorrectly. The stress is not on the "i", but on the "u."

I wonder if one of our better wags can come up with something playing on that, I v You.

Oh my, good old cockney rhyming slang. I get it once it's explained, but never manage to figure it out unassisted.

à la mode

An easy one, from French, but it lets me squeeze in the quality of being à la mode: alamodality.

Plus, I never knew it also meant meat and vegetables stewed in red wine.

Serendipity working here. I found this one while looking up another word. It means riffraff, rabble, doggery (a root related word, too).

I just had to look this one up after coming across it in a Dick Francis book. So about 50 years ago it was still in use.
