RSS Feed is back up

Hi,

I've updated the RSS feed so that it's served as a static file that's updated every 10 minutes, which should keep our server from bursting into flames. Let me know if there are any problems.

Hi everybody, The problem was because we were getting too many hits to the rss feed for the Agora. The rss.php script dynamically builds the feed every time it's requested, which hammers the database. I'm going to work on a method where it will save the feed every 5 minutes or so, and just hand that...

Re: Fixed It, Maybe?

Well now, so much for theories. Now I see the ad on the left, obscuring the left side of the message boxes -names and such. And this is on the current page, not the one with the long link. And as I type this it's also on this page (!). And when I preview, it obscures that. Don't know what to say. W...

Fixed It, Maybe?

Hi, Give this a shot. (Make sure you're getting the most recent version of the page, maybe clear your cache or hold SHIFT when clicking the reload button on your browser.) I've moved the ad bar to the left side so that when the text overflows from the main page (which is apparently what was happenin...

Ad Box Blocking Agora?

Hi, I've noticed a lot of comments about the ad bar blocking the agora content. Which browsers are you using? (What resolution, and are you using large fonts?) We've tested the bar on Firefox (Linux and Windows), IE6, Opera and Safari (OS X 10.4's version). If the bar causes problems when you're vie...

Technical Difficulties

Hi everybody, We were recently the victim of a sort of denial-of-service attack on our server, where a spammer sent out a bunch of messages from forged @alphadictionary.com addresses, and we got hit with the bounce messages. As a result, we were running low on memory and that might have caused datab...

New Feature: Unicode Characters in Message Composer

Hi, By request of Stargzer, I've added a list of accented characters to the "View more emoticons" popup panel in the message composer. If you click the letters, they'll show up at the end of your message text. Let me know if there are other characters you'd want me to add (give me the Unic...

Another new phpBB Version

Hi,

I've upgraded phpBB from 2.0.18 to 2.0.19, and this time I've run the update script, so there shouldn't be any problems like last time. Of course, I've done this at 5:30PM on a Friday afternoon, so your kilometrage may vary. Let me know if there are any glitches.

Thanks,

Andrew

Cleared out the sessions table

Hi,

There was something else I needed to change about the forum software with the upgrade that I didn't do - they added a database table and I didn't update ours to synchronize with it. Everything should be OK now.

New PhpBB Version

Hi,

I just wanted to let everybody know that I've upgraded the forum software to a new version, and I would ask everybody to keep their eyes open for the glitches that inevitably pop up after stuff like this. :D

Thanks,

Quoting Newspaper Articles in the Forum

Hi, I know that a lot of newspaper sites require registration to view articles, and the behavior is likely to go unnoticed, but I'd like to ask that people please not post full article texts from third-party sources. (Unless, of course, it's stated that such copying is allowed, which I think is the ...

Longer Cookies

Hi,

I extended the expiration time on your login cookies from an hour to a day. As long as you don't spend more than a day on a post you should be OK.

Re: Are any of you on AOL?

I've read that because of AOL's system of WWW proxy servers, phpBB posts can get lost in a manner similar to how you are describing. So, if you're on AOL and losing posts, let me know and I can work on tracking down the problem further. The problem that occurs with AOL could also happen if you're u...
