Re: Parse

Without more context for the usage, it's hard to say, but dictionary.com does have this as its third definition of parse:

to analyze (something, as a speech or behavior) to discover its implications or uncover a deeper meaning

That would seem to make the quoted NYT bit fit.

Re: Xeriscape

Sometime this year is this word's 40th birthday! There aren't too many out there where we know when and where they originated. I wonder how we could go about tracking down the actual first use. :?: Sounds like a job for bnjtokyo, to me. Hint, hint.

Re: Proceleusmatic

Another meaning to add is incite. Some speaker back in January of this year gave a rather proceleusmatic talk that lead to death and destruction.

Some on-line dictionaries ignore this meaning entirely, giving only the one linked to prosody.

Also very useful when speaking of gentle waves upon a beach. Especially when accompanied by moonlight.

Ow means it hurt enough to keep you from getting to the ch. If the pain passes quickly, you can always add it back a bit later, "Ow ... ch."

 Does this mean back-bacon and backgammon are somehow related? Or am I just hamming it up? :D

I just tried to check this out, and it turns out to be a subscription only site. You can register for a free trial, but that's not my cup of tea for something I only wish to visit once. Sigh, woe art I. :|

Re: Drastic

There is a web site called drasticity.com, but as it's in a language even Gargle* can't translate, I have no idea what it's about. Sports related, judging from the pictures. And, of course, now that drasticity and drasticness have been used here, they should show up in searches. That's all it takes ...

Re: ambience

Dictionary.com simply tells us to look at ambiance, which looks wrong to me. Unless I'm going to go for an Anglicization of the pronunciation. I'm a snob, so I'll stick to the French tasting one.

Re: Debunk

One growth area of the Internot is in fact-checking, or debunking, web-sites. Snopes.com is perhaps the oldest and best known, but there are now many others that have sprouted up over the last couple of years.
