Re: Umarell

I wonder what construction workers in various countries call these kinds of people. "Sidewalk Managers" would be a good one, perhaps. I suppose most real ones wouldn't be printable here, though.

Re: Becoming

I'm not sure this is limited to women. Cannot a gentleman act in a becoming manner? Or, to put it another way, should not boys be encouraged to behave in a manner becoming a gentleman?

Re: Partisan

If spelled with a z, I always put the stress on the last syllable. Probably because that's how it would be in Russian, but it makes an interesting difference in the feel of the word.

A partisan is also a kind of spear head, as seen here. From the idea of it being the weapon of a partisan.

Re: Close

Probably from the area about a church or somesuch, as a type of cloister, enclosed bit. Or, perhaps, simply because it was close to the church.

Edit: Taken up and treated here.

Partisan

Not really the most exciting of etymologies, but did you know that this is also a kind of weapon? A spear with curved blades at the base: Image In the set of weapons called polearms.

Re: Protuberant

Protuberant could be reworked as an April Fool's word, too. Doesn't it really mean "in favor of potatoes and such root vegetables"?

Re: Remission

But the "sending in" of payments is remittance, isn't it? I've never seen remission in any sense except that of a disease that has lessened in severity but not necessarily gone away. :?

I believe remission is the act of remitting, remittance the thing remitted.

Re: Protuberant

I've forgotten for the moment just which author it is, but one of those I read frequently loves to describe people as exophthalmic, having protuberant or prominent eyeballs. Like this   .
