Re: Sultry

The connection is also made in French: La petite mort (the little death). It began life as a short loss of consciousness, but took on other meanings.

Re: Juggernaut

While in Notes, the verb form is used for a positive result, I wonder how often juggernaut in general is. It carries so much violent baggage that even when trying to think positive, there are serious negative tones.

I just learned that Faulkner never graduated from high school. And I'll go out on a limb and say a 2 cent stamp pre-dates anyone on this board. That was a long, long time ago.

Re: CRITERION

Nice way of showing how to use the singular.

Too bad too few people with the criteria for being a good anything in political office will stoop to run.

Re: Atavistic

Is going through old un-answered posts atavistic? :)

More seriously, is the world slipping into atavism? Many countries do seem to be going backward.

Re: Anadiplosis

Well, I got a smile this morning. :)

I looked at Etymonline to see what they have there on this word. The quote they use to demonstrate the meaning is from Yoda!

"Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering."

Next step, Congress!

For a look at what the Soviets called a parasite on society, check out "The Girl from Petrovka", a nice little movie starring Goldie Hawn and Hal Holbrook from 1974.

Re: Commemoration

And if I may make so bold, it is never remiss to show our gratitude by sending along-- by way of commemoration-- a bit of the folding green, in any amount, for any excuse, on any date? Just a thought... Debby M Blatant plug, but here goes: They may not fold, but e-commemorations can be made via: ht...

Re: Abuse

Abuse of position or power can also be excessive, as in definition 4. I remember a tale of long ago, but still in my lifetime, when a new city police office was nicknamed 'Arresto' (a play on his real last name), because in his first month on the job he issued more tickets and citations than the res...

Re: Brindled

Officially, we're told this word applies on animal hides and such. How about human animals? Hair dyeing, in particular. I recently saw a woman at the grocery store who had black hair with golden streaks and splashes added. Could we, would we, should we, call that brindled? Or brindling?

Re: LABOR

That 'b' may have become a 'v' in Italian, but it didn't in English, so that word that's really close to laboratory isn't related at all. That root washed up on our linguistic shores as lave and its kin.
