Thus, when protesting the draft, people were calling for the proscription of conscription.

A good suggestion, and one that hasn't been taken up as yet. Perhaps we'll see it sometime soon.

"The new office interns were so intemerate it seemed a shame to have to initiate them into the real world. A dirty job, but someone's got to do it, I suppose."

Re: IRIDESCENT

"The president of the oil plant wore a ring with an iridescent gemstone that matched perfectly the colors in the film of oil on the surface of the creek that ran by the plant." A good word to apply to the BP oil disaster in the Gulf this year. Does anyone out there think this word could b...

Lots of people put an "a" in my handle, but I spell it the way it is because there are days when I don't know if I'm missing an "a" or two "e's."
Might this also hark back to olden days, when names could be only eight letters or digits long?

Pomander

I just came across the word I was looking for: Pomanders – oranges studded with cloves – have been used since medieval times as natural air fresheners. Use a skewer or fine knitting needle to make holes in the skin of an orange, and insert cloves. Place in a paper bag in a cool, dry spot for 4-6 wee...

The word history reminds me of the two vultures delayed at the airport. It seems they were allowed only one carrion each.

I've been watching some of the old "Perry Mason" TV shows lately, and this word fits right in with much of the aura in them. The novels, which are older, are an even better fit.

In the August 30, 2010 issue of the New Yorker, there is an interesting article on prosopagnosia; the inability to recognize faces. Hard to imagine what that must be like; not knowing who your friends are until they speak.

Re: Kindle

A word that is sure to confuse someone with spark of passion. But passion for what? A lover's heart? Or a fictitious character in an e-book?
Or, perhaps, a love of bunnies.
