Etymonline says that it used to be spelled cullibility, which might make it related to cull, which is from Latin.

It's a long shot, and I'm no professional, but it sounds good to me.

Cull, as in to pluck out inferior things; and gull, one who swallows inferior things hook, line, and sinker.
