Goan

I grew up saying the word goan (rhymes with loan or phone) to mean going to, as in "I'm goan do that when I get around to it." But most people look at me oddly when I say that, so is it just me, or is this something southern as well?

Carry

We used to say, "Will you carry me to the store?" instead of "Take me to the store." We lived in Memphis at the time. I haven't heard that one in years.

Would of

People in PA say if you would of done your job right, I wouldn't of hollered at you. And if I had of known that, I wouldn't of done it that way.
Whatever happened to the words had/have?
Is this the dumbing down of America, or this just another regional thing?

Rubber versus gum

Well, in Tennessee, we called them rubber bands, because they were made out of rubber, see, but in Pittsburgh it is always gum bands. They are not made out of gum, so I don't know why they call them that, but having lived here now for 37 years, I have finally acclimated and succumbed to the local ja...

Examples

I have a "Southern" habit of saying PERmit, to mean a license, and perMIT to mean I will allow you to do something. Actually, I thought that was just using English correctly, but here in Pennsylvania, everybody (especially my husband) says perMIT to mean go get your perMIT to drive. Also t...

Pool and Pole

I grew up in Tennessee, where I learned to say pool, for a swimming pool, and pole for a telephone pole, but now that I live in PA, my kids say pool to mean a telephone pole. Is that a Pennsylvania thing? It drives me nuts.

Worsh

Oh, I thought this thread was about using the word worsh for wash. I grew up in Memphis, TN, and my neighbors across the street always used to say, "Worsh your hands, and wrench 'em off." I don't know why, nobody else I knew ever said that. We always used to laugh about that. Especially wh...

Pop or Coke

I grew up in Tennessee, where all soft drinks were called Cokes, and the first time I heard the word "pop" was in Michigan, when someone asked me, "Do you want a pop?" and I said, "Do I wanna WHAT??" I thought it was something they wanted me to DO! LOL. Now I live in Pe...
