tense/intense (e.g. a tense/intense atmosphere) valuable/invaluable (compare price/priceless , and contrast worth/worthless ). I'm not sure these are quite the same. If you go to an intense movie, you won't necessarily think it was tense, would you? And something can be valuable, but not invaluable...

I can't be sure off the top of my head, but it seems to me that -ant -ent are adjectival, whereas -ance -ence are nominal.

dependent : dependence
correspondent : correspondence

etc.

Here's what etymonline has to say: 1590s, "oppressively hot, close and moist" (of weather), from obs. verb sulter "to swelter" (1580s), alteration of swelter. Fig. sense of "hot with lust" is attested from 1704; of women, "lascivious, sensual, arousing desire"...
