From Latin, to drink, according to one dictionary. we pilfered it from French. But now I am confused, as I see from today’s Goodword that the verb for to drink in Latin is bibere. Is there a subtle distinction I am missing?

Has this been adopted by English speakers? I saw this in the book about Major Taylor, the premier professional bicycle racer from the turn of the last century. It means a list of prize winners. He is certainly on the list.

Agreed. Is it one of the “click” languages? I often thought that the first languages were probably imitations of sounds humans heard in the woods and savannah and thus the bushmen clicks.

Here’s an interesting bit of speculation: the Latin is possibly of Etruscan origin from Semitic. If so, there was substantial trade in the prehistoric Mediterranean.
