Thanks for the heads up, Sluggo...you saved me a few bucks!

I'm not the brightest guy, but don't think I need the "what is a word" deal.

Yeah, I'd like to be able to see that as well. By habit (and training) I hit the space bar twice at the end of a sentence. However, I'm not sure that any of the forums I haunt double-space after a sentence...in fact, I'm sure none of them do. Not being very techy, I wouldn't know but that it may no...

I must be sheltered, I have no idea how "tootsie pop" could be a racial reference.
It's most likely because Tootsie Rolls are brown.
But tootsie pops are the color of the rainbow...sounds multi-racial to me.

Thanks...it says etymology unknown. I know about Mt. Olympus, heck I've been there...but still wonder about what the word means literally. Maybe I'll never know...I tend to get to hung up on these types of things coming from an area of the country where so many things have Indian names and those nam...

Olympia/Olympic/Olympian

Ok, I'm looking for the etymolgy of this word--know (or assume) it's Greek. I'm looking for the meaning of the word. All I'm finding are things like "of, or relating to, the Olympics". Duh. I also know it's a place name as in Mt. Olympia in Greece, Olympia, WA, Olympic Peninsula, Olympic N...

Used to live in a typically un-rorulent (spellcheck doesn't like this word) place where we got about 6 inches of rain a year--not a lot fo dew there very often. One summer for about 6 weeks a cougar would usually slip in early mornings and drink out of our pool. Never heard cougars there roar...hea...

So, Skinem, you prefer "duck tape," which was the original name and pronunciation for the product we now call "duct tape," thanks to improper usage? That transformation only took a decade or two! Sure, I'm old enough I pre-date the move to "duct" tape...only knew it as...

I must be sheltered, I have no idea how "tootsie pop" could be a racial reference. Of all the places I've lived, it seems the South seems to outshine the west and north when it comes to colorful expressions and nicknames. I think everyone I knew in the South had a nickname. Ok, that's an e...

I'm not hearing this word, but don'tch know that more syllables=more intelligence? You know the saying "if you can't blind them with brilliance, baffle them with bovine scatology." Where are you hearing it...print, tv, just people talking? The thing I'm hearing more of in daily conversatio...

Warning...this one's a bad one... A prison inmate was assigned to learn carpentry and soon became the best carpenter in the prison. The warden heard about the inmate's work. So, when it was time to remodel his kitchen, he approached the inmate. But the inmate refused to fit a countertop for the ward...

Personally, I prefer to try to adhere to original, or perhaps a more accurate word would be, "proper" pronunciation. Sure, there is (de)evolution in word pronunciation and usage, but to not rail against it will just lead to more words improper usage or pronunciation becoming accepted makin...

I had no idea about those two other meanings of the word, nor have I ever heard the word "barrack" used in the singular form...every time that I can recall hearing it used there was an 's' at the end of the word... He's in the barracks. We're going to the barracks. We live in the barracks....
