Re: Pogonophilia
I believe it was our beloved Pogo who coined the famous quote: "We have met the enemy and he is us." It applies just as much today as it did in the 1950s. I always admired his Everyman's (Everypossum's?) viewpoint on events and politics.

Re: Virtual
I've observed that some equate "virtual"with "actual"or "literal". Perhaps the word to them is associated with "verity" or "verisimilitude"? Any connection there?

Re: Tom Swifty
Back in the 60s and 70s our group of goofy friends played with an antidote to Tom Swiftys by devising what we called George Slowlys. I don't recall many of them now, but the gist of it went something like: "ARRRgh!, she cooed" - you get the idea. Dumb party games, but some people were pret...

Re: Paronomasia
I'd think the wives' names would be spelled "Rae", the more common feminine form of the name. Did they perhaps also raise Cain as they met at that central room (those naughty Raes)?

Re: Paronomasia
I first heard the paronomasia about the Focus Ranch (also called, perhaps erroneously, the Solar Apex Ranch) in 1961, but it was presented as a triple example, adding "the place where the sons raze meat". It obviously wasn't referring to a dairy operation.

Re: Eidolon
When I was about 7, my older brother was determined to have an eidetic memory. I asked my mother how to spell it, looked it up, and in the process of searching the dictionary found this wonderful word. I was quite taken with the sound of it and named my then imaginary friend Eidolon, replacing the m...

I am sperate that someday I, too, can post such a gawdawfully fine phrase as "the Bedside Manor on Rue Barbe Pye...". Persevere, persevere!

Re: Good Words Five Days a Week
Dr. Goodword is one of the few inbox messages that I actually look forward to receiving. Much of what I'm sure we all get can easily be deleted or relegated to spam without bothering to open and read it. But anything from Doc and alphadictionary.com is eagerly awaited, read and often shared. Thanks ...

Re: Good Words Five Days a Week
Take a break, Doc - even if you love what you do and are so good at it, burn-out is real and needs attending to. Weekend repeats are fine for those of us whose attentions can be fragmented elsewhere occasionally. They just help to cement a word in distracted brains. Go for it! If NPR's Car Talk can ...

Re: Hootenanny
Thanks. I do that dance all during the growing season as I glean lovely greens from my little potager garden outside my back door. It's so satisfying to just step out and gather dinner.

Re: Hootenanny
Makes sense. I've known many who danced down the rows tending to their gardens. Nip some weeds there, deepen a moat around a plant here, stomp down some disturbed dirt at the end of a row, bend to tuck protective hills around an emerging potato, stretch and search for hidden beans or peas or tomatoe...

Re: Hootenanny
I also vote for the third meaning. My little 0017 Martin guitar and I participated in many a hootenanny in the 60s and 70s, along with players of guitar, mandolin, banjo (both 4-string and 5-string long-neck), fiddle (!), dulcimer, lute, recorder, autoharp (Mother Maybelle style, of course), gut buc...
