Re: Springhouse

My father-in-law was an iceman back in the day. He was a retired man when my wife and I married but my wife remembers when he would make his rounds delivering ice to people on his route for their iceboxes. Interesting.

Re: PULCHRITUDE

At first blush, like Perry, I did not like this word. What a surprise when I read the Meaning section and found that it refers to lavish beauty! Just from the sound of the word I would have thought the definition would be something ugly. Again, a perfect example of why you shouldn't judge a book (or...

Re: Felon

Never heard of a bone felon before now but must be leaning toward the second meaning of the word. Never heard of a felon being an abscess and never heard it called a whitlow either. Learn something new every day!

Re: Grub

Interestingly, I just checked my Facebook page today and had received a posting from my sister. She posted a picture of some meal she had made with the caption "Getting ready to grub down!" I guess as opposed to "chow down", which is probably what I would have said.

Re: Genuflection

I've always thought of genuflection in the religious sense. The motion I've seen others do to sovereigns, to me, is bowing not genuflecting. I've only seen kow-towing in Oriental movies.

Re: Expiate

This takes me back to my early life when I learned Spanish. The Spanish word for expiate is "expiacion" with an accent mark on the "o" (wasn't sure how to make an "o" with an accent mark over it). The only way I've heard the word used in Spanish is for "atonement&q...

Re: Warlock

I have an ex-sister-in-law who came home one day to inform everyone she was now a witch. Frankly, I knew there was something wrong with her from the get-go. Even changed her name to one of the minor dieties in the witch world. To the best of my knowledge, I have never met a warlock or someone who co...

Re: Mote

OOPS! Should have said "uttermost farthing". As in Matthew 5:26 "Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing." I stand corrected.

Re: Scion

I have this word several times while reading and never really understood its meaning. Thanks to the Alpha Agora for clearing it up. I had to smile. NO ONE would ever accuse me of being a scion. As a proud card carrying member of the hoi polloi, I have no worries about that.

Glad to see this word here. I use it often, although I prefer to use "jot", "tittle" or "ultimate farthing". Just saying.

Re: Propaganda

I've always thought of propaganda as a mild form of brainwashing, or at least a stronger form of trying to influence others. Aren't history writers practicing a form of propaganda? History is usually told by the victors.

Re: Troglodyte

Went even further back in time than misterdoe. Way, WAY back to 1970 :D to when I first heard the word troglodyte. It was in a really lousy B-movie named "Trog" which starred no less than Joan Crawford. Really sad to see her in such a crummy movie after such a great career. She must have b...

Re: Cacodemon

Sad but true. I, too, have anger management issues from time to time. That's my endemic nature. One of my biggest pet peeves? When I read the setup instructions on some device or construction which says if you do Step 1, Step 2 and Step 3 the results will be Finished Product 4. So I do Steps 1-3 exa...
