Re: Indomitable

There is Invictus for those of such a mind. Here in the hinterlands, we just hunker down and pray.

Re: Impassible

So, when the fire in one's heart has gone out, one becomes impassible.

Re: Extenuate

I wasn't aware of definition one. I will use extenuate in that sense henceforth where appropriate. That is almost as good as learning a totally new word.

Re: Forlorn

And then there are the lovelorn, a special group amongst the forlorn. Also consider Lorna Doone who gave up being a character in a Victorian novel to bake the world's best loved shortbread cookies. :D

Re: Dyspnea

My dear wife has been an asthmatic all her life. At the present time she has respiratory and heart problems that prevent adequate oxygen to the brain. Her dyspnea is a serious condition. I have known you Agora folks a long time. Please join me in the hope that she will be restored by the stint they ...

Notice that seemly means "nice" and unseemly is close to meaning seamy.

Re: Diaphanous

Diaphanous is too lovely a word to waste on the more mundane definitions. I want to dwell on diaphanous gowns clothing lovely ladies. On the other hand, maybe I ought not comment at all.

Re: Waiter

Here in the hinterlands we still use the words waiter and waitress. Gender specifics do not bother us. In the good old days, a café was often the place for a girl to work while looking for a significant other. Cupid was likely to show up at any time. Several of my aunts and uncles made the connubial...

Re: Shillelagh

Being descended from denizens of the "auld sod" and having a rather romantic desire to span time and place and identify with these forebearers, I wish I had my own Shillelagh. If I had one, I would handle it with care.

Re: Mongrel

I welcome the comment, David. I was mainly referring to the lack of beauty of the word itself and not the definition. Since it applies only to dogs in my experience and since I am mega allergic to dogs, I don't much like its primary meaning. As far as humans go, I would never call a human a mongrel ...

Re: Forbid

A good goodword. If you make the simple translation of forbidden to the German verboten, the word suddenly takes on a life of its own. This happens with a lot of words in German. Even a simple "Auf Wiedersehen" could make one's blood run cold.
