Not a pleasant concept to read about. But it does happen.
I too misread the word at first. Interesting New Yorker
story.

Squalid politicians. Thought of this, too, upon reading today's email for word of the day. Getting more and more so. Squalid fish: there used to be a fish market here, when, as a boy, I went in with my grandmother. I absolutely detested that trek to the market. But she always made me go, to carry th...

Here's a cute word: (from YourDictionary word of day): GALIMATIAS Gibberish, foolish talk; unintelligible speech. Usage: The world galimatias, which itself sounds unintelligible, simply means unintelligible speech. It can be used in reference to speaking gibberish (or “gobbledygook”), although it is...

Mom, bless her heart, she's a baker. I wonder how long it would take her To shout "Beck, Beck, beck," Before wringing my neck And then bopping me with the salt shaker? Perhaps you can mail me the saltshaker, saparris stole mine making margaritas in some other thread, or I lost it in Marga...

Sorry, I did not mean to intrude.
I understand you are waiting for the Doc take on the word.
I just am 'trolling' the threads and saw it, thought I would
do a little research.

That site is a good site, I have it bookmarked as well.
I love that word mentioned: Absquatulate.

I find myself wanting this to be a "sound" word. That is to say, it feels to me that it should be onomatopoeic. I guess it's just the "klink," but it's hard to remember that it's really just flashy splashy.

It reminds me of the fruit: kumquat.

Re: clinquant

Very true! I forgot about how some of the fruit and nut tree growers out here in my area of California use a certain type of tinsel to keep the scavenging birds away as well.

Wow, this whole concept is new to me. Thanks.

Yes, they are really getting dumped on. I have branches
on spruce and pine trees almost ready to break, as the
snow has frozen to ice. Sure hope it does not happen.
