Re: Brusque

Shakespeare, who said almost everything first, used both "rarest" and "most rare," the latter at least eight times. Here are some better known examples The Tempest Act II Scene 1 Antonio: And the rarest that e'er came there Act III Scene 1 Prospero Fair encounter Of two most rare...

Re: Eponym - Denim & Jeans

"Levis" is included in the list of eponyms on this site https://www.alphadictionary.com/articles/eponyms/eponym_list_l.html In support of its eponymic status, the apostrophe is omitted in the entry, but it is also retains the upper-case L which suggests Dr Beard is not entirely sure it has...

Re: Popups on this site

Dr Goodword, thank you for your efforts. Unfortunately, I am still getting an ad when click on the link to the Agora. It appears these ads appear only on the first time I go to the Agora page following a boot-up. I am using Safari 13.1.1. and macOS Catalina 10.15.5

Re: Buncombe

According to the "bunkum/bunk" entry in the list of eponyms on this site "After Buncombe County in western North Carolina, from a long, boring speech made around 1820 by its Republican congressman, Felix Walker (1753-1828) "for Buncombe" on an issue that was totally unrelate...

Re: Eponym - Denim & Jeans

I am relying on the definition of "eponym" provided with the list of Eponyms on this site: "An eponym as we will use the term here is an ordinary common noun derived from a proper noun, the name of a person or PLACE [emphasis added]." https://www.alphadictionary.com/articles/epon...

Re: Sierra

Dr Goodword, I'm fond of both the Sierra Nevada and the Tetons. I last visited the Tetons in 1917, and I observed the total solar eclipse on August 17 not far from the barn on Mormon Row shown in the original thumbnail (or Antelope Flats which is probably where the buffalo currently pictured is graz...

Re: Sierra

But please note that the thumbnail photo illustrating this word is of the Grand Teton in Grand Teton National Park in the Teton Range of the Rocky Mountains. The name of the range is attributed to French-speaking fur trappers who referred to the Grand Teton and its two neighboring peaks as les trois...

Re: Circumcyclation

Thank you, Mr Kovac, for your graceful concession of priority. The invention of a new word is a rare and wonderful experience. Long may circumcyclation and those in its circle circulate.

Re: Cyclorama

Circumcyclation is a neologism coined by me based on circumnavigation and circumambulation. It constructed from "circum-" around, "cycle" travel by bicycle, and "-ation" a suffix denoting an action or process. So a "circumcyclation of Hokkaido" would denote th...

The only cyclorama of this sort that I have had the pleasure of visiting is the Raclawice Panorama in Wroclaw, Poland The Racławice Panorama is a monumental cycloramic painting depicting the Battle of Racławice, during the Kościuszko Uprising. It is located in Wrocław, Poland. The painting is one of...

Re: Trilemma

I agree with you that triceratops is probably the best animal to picture when one is on the horns of a trilemma. According to this web site, there is more than one convention on how to count the points of deer's antlers, but the article does suggest an odd number of points is possible. https://billi...
