Re: Crescent

totally piques my curiosity how one word can mean two
different things as in Greek Koros is boy and satiated; as in
Doc's explanation.

Re: Enclave

I have those same questions, David, every time I see that
map or hear the word 'enclave'. Europe is full of them,
along the Swiss border, i.e. We have one in the very northern
border of the state of Minnesota, a small chunk of that state
is in the Canadian province of Manitoba.

I most often think of the highways in Los Angeles
from movies I've seen. The scenarios keep me from
ever visiting that city.

Re: Syzygy

Is this a word without vowels? No, but it is the only word with three vocalic Ys, beating zyzzyva by one.
What about polygyny?

Re: Syzygy

This was one of the first words that my grandfather, who was in love with the English language, taught me when I was a child. Mostly because of the spelling.

Just for geographers everywhere the Czech Republic
is trying to get everyone to call if Czechia, not to be
confused with Chechnia.

The National Cathedral in Washington DC has many
gargoyles on its towers. The most fascinating is
one of Darth Vader of Star WArs fame.

Re: Ubiquity

Sorry, Debbie, I should have "translated" it. It's not Latin, but
it misuses Latin words.
Ubi=where,sunt=is/are, meum=my, sub=under

thusly: "where, oh where are my under where" (wear)
high school boy stuff back in the day.

Re: Ubiquity

the discussion of ubi reminded me of this whimsy from my
high school days:

"Ubi, ubi, sunt meum sub ubi?"

silly, I know.
