Mess
Non-military readers may well be wondering why a “mess” is as associated with its military meaning. “Mess” refers to an area or facility where military personnel socialize and eat. According to Wikipedia, the root of mess is from the Old French mes, meaning portion of food, the original sense being a course of a meal put on the table. The term mess was often used in 13th century England, referring to cooked or liquid dishes in particular, as in a mess of pottage (porridge or soup).

Re: (Military) Mess
Presumably related to a mix? Most cooking is about mixing ingredients. Certainly when I cook the result is often a mess.
