Column

Postby bbeeton » Wed Mar 17, 2021 1:13 pm

This word has been mentioned frequently, but apparently not yet examined for itself. Quite a few possibilities.

A tall thin structural element. When several are holding something up (like a pediment or lintel, they may be considered a colonnade. A singular column is often referred to as a pillar.

Or something physical in columnar shape: a pillar of fire, but a column of smoke.

A long narrow presentation of text, or the concept of such. Someone who writes a recurring column is called a columnist.

A vertical assembly of objects, as a column of numbers. Or possibly a stack if the objects are physical.

A nasty journalist could write a column of calumny.
Life is like playing chess with chessmen who each have thoughts and feelings and motives of their own.
