But wait PW, we have to have such stories about our heroes, George Washingtom cutting down the cherry tree, Abe Lincoln learning to write on a wooden shovel or walking miles to refund a customer's penny. It's essential that our biggest and best forefathers have foibles.

Gosh, Mark, I completely forgot. What about Millard Fillmore, for whom it's recorded: "through methodical industry and some competence an uninspiring man could make the American dream come true." (whitehouse.gov/history/presidents/)

Hm. Not so inspiring, maybe. "Methodical" and "uninspiring" don't quite hack it. How about: Herbert Hoover, who invented the the vacuum cleaner at age 10? No? Sheesh.

Ah, I know....what about Jimmy Carter, only 12 years old and invented the peanut? Or Al Gore, who broke through the Internet Barrier to become the Fastest Man in Washington with a Blow-Dry Hairdo? Or why not Bill Clinton, the inventor of the...uh uh. Not going there for sure.

On a morbid note, same topic-

Dale Hausner, . . .weapons he owns:

"... blowguns, various stabbing weapons, ice picks, owls, stuff like that..."

Awl righty then...

(seen on Countdown, MSNBC)
May a thousand owls fly over his hogan.

Not a gaffe, but a very funny bumper sticker.

Homer, Alaska
A quaint drinking village with a fishing problem.

When I was the ripe old age of two, my parents moved to the edge-of-nowhere- Alaska for some high security government thinga- majiggy for my mom's work. It was so high security, that if she told herself, she would have to, uh, kill herself. She said the drinking was rampent, like, no big deal around there. Then there were the local drunks... Isn't alcohol like a truth serum or something? So much for keeping a tight lid on things around there. That would explain a lot.

Similar to the text on a ballcap I own:
Annapolis: A drinking town with a sailing problem
Damn blow-boaters!

Heard today--an oldie but a goodie--and one of my pet peeves..."laxadaisacal".
WAY too common for my tastes. It's just...wrong.

Skinny, it's folks with pure lackadaisical attitudes that do that.

A twofer! In the same day an official of a national realtor association probably meant to say "we must be vigilant" but instead said "viligant"
(villagent? It takes a village gent?)

--later on the boob tube a news reader let slip that "the Democrats have been chafing at the bit" -probably more info than any of us wanted to know...

looks like a village is missing it's idiot and a charitable person should send a case of talcum powder to the Democratic National Headquarters.

Heard this morning--talking about college financial aide and the FAFSA. Someone didn't know what that was, and another person told them it was an "anacronym". An abbreviation for old out of date things? :D

Anachronym: This could be the word for an acronym that's been disarmed, e.g. "personal PIN number"...
