I think it might be impossible to find the first time that this phrase was used.

It may have been meant literally, or maybe not, but it has come to mean that one doesn't not want to face the danger, agony, punishment, uncertainty, sadness, or humiliation of the near-present or near-future circumstance.

I think that I have hear it used also to mean "I could die happy now," but I think this is a new, and somewhat "off," extension of the phrase.
