Sports Terms

Postby Slava » Thu Nov 07, 2013 10:19 am

Here's a fun little piece from the Chronicle of Higher Education: ... ay-speech/

It is quite amazing how many phrases we use come from sports.

Make sure you read the comments, too. As good as the article, I'd say. And no trolls, to boot!

There was a great parody of sportswriting in my college freshman English book by Frank somebody. Maybe that will resonate with someone and help me retrieve it. I wrote sports for my HS and freshman college papers, so I continue to pay attention to that genre, which can be so easily cliched (clichèed?). I note how predictable TV sports interviews are as are the announcers. Thus I watch most sports with the sound off.

Hello_kitty, you are very welcome. We all made our first few posts once and found people took us seriously - or not so, depending on how serious we might be. Place is infested with puns. Hang around and keep posting.
