Welcome to our new Agora

WELCOME

Here is the new cabinet of Dr. Goodword, formerly Dr. Language of yourDictionary.com. We hope it will offer an even more comfortable environment in which to discuss the fascinating languages we speak.

Why the Alpha Agora? Well, Alpha is our new name, of course. But this name also almost forces us to pronounce "Agora" correctly. All dictionaries tell us that the accent is on the first syllable (Greek pronunciation) even though the English grammar we have assimilated tells us it should go on the second. I tend to let English do what it wants, but to be on the same page as everyone else who reads dictionaries, I guess we should follow their advice this time.

Please, test out this website and report any malfunctions or suggestions for improvements to this forum. Dr. Goodword himself will be watching it more closely than in the past.

I've been looking around, looks pretty nice in here. I hope we can get some awesome topics going in here. I have a new creative introduction suggestion for WOTD in my head, already.

I'm here under (another) pseudonym. I was hoping to have some fun with it, but I guess my style is a dead giveaway!

Someone already knows who I am.

Feeling familiar

Well, it takes a while to build an Agora group but I'm happy to hear some familiar voices already. Feels good.

I'm off on my third major language website in 10 years (Web of Online Dictionaries, yourDictionary, Alpha Dictionary). Business problems forced me out of yourDictionary. This site and the company behind it are all my own and we will be doing a good deal more and, hopefully, more interesting things here. So, let us know what you would like to see.

Katy, thanks for the email. I apologise for neglecting the Agora <makes mental note of correct stress> recently, but I'll pop in from time to time. Looks like a nice bb.

I use Win XP and have installed all kinds of foreign language support. I just switch to CH using a keboard shortcut and start typing in pinyin. Arabic, and Indian languages are trickier, because MS forces you to use native keyboards, not phonetic ones. The multilanguage SW I use when writing for my own needs is great, but not UNICODE compatible. For the time being, my interests are concentrated on Chinese, so I haven't investigated keyboard utilities like Tavultesoft. Probably they could be used to remap my keyboard, if I could spare the time.
