I found this article this morning that the both defends and eschews the use of the word "like." ... -hes-wrong

After re-reading the piece, I realize now one of the major problems with "like". When transcribed, it is not done properly.
"Like" requires, in writing, a comma and quotation marks.

"She was like are you for real?" and "She was like, 'Are you for real?'" are very different.

If written this way, it makes much more sense. Spoken, however, the listener must apply these bits as deemed appropriate. So, I'd say "like" is difficult and best avoided in speech.
Life is like playing chess with chessmen who each have thoughts and feelings and motives of their own.
