Bat Hides and Frog Stranglers

Postby Slava » Thu Sep 08, 2016 11:21 am

From The Atlantic, a piece on an attempt to resurrect or save some regional slang terms: Bat Hides. What do you folks think? Have any of you ever heard any of them?
Life is like playing chess with chessmen who each have thoughts and feelings and motives of their own.

"cuddy" seems to be alive and well in the nautical sense. I have always understood it to refer to a small enclosure on a boat and that meaning is re-enforced by various dictionaries.

After that, "barn burner" and "farmer's match" are synonyms although I have never heard either term used.

Heard barn burner applied to high scoring athletic contests.
Cup towel for dish towel.
Frog stranglef is alive and well here.
And so is tow sack.

About 30 years ago I was introduced to the phrase "go around by Laura's house." The meaning is to unnecessarily take the long way around, but often applied to a long winded story teller.
