Queer ‘ī’ from a Straitened Guy

Postby brogine » Mon Aug 16, 2021 3:57 pm

Several dictionaries I’ve looked at indicate the same long ‘i’ in
high
high school
my
might
not to mention cetera.

What gives? Do you pronounce them the same way?

Is cetera somewhere pronounced with a long i? Is that the question? All the others are long to me.

They really sound the same to you? The latter in each pair has a distinctly ‘broader’ sound to me. Amen corner . . . ?
