Picnic

Postby justscience » Sat Jun 10, 2023 11:53 am

A grand summer tradition, a meal taken outside, i.e., alfresco. Usually taken to mean a meal of leisure, distinct from a field hand's lunch.

Possibly from the French pique-nique.

A lovely summer word, this one's been to the Good Doctor's office twice before: here and here.
Life is like playing chess with chessmen who each have thoughts and feelings and motives of their own.

The reference to "pique-nique" causes me to think of the painting "Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe", by Edouard Manet, now residing at the gorgeous Musée d'Orsay in Paris, home also to Whistler's mother, (the "Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1") and many other works whose size exceeds one's expectation.
