I read somewhere that lox is a word whose pronunciation did not change since it appeared in PIE! It would be interesting to know more about it.

Not only the pronunciation is interesting, but the fact that the presence of this word for salmon has been used with a few other similarly ancient words, such as "larch", to develop some solid theories about where geographically the people who spoke the ur-PIE originated. The good Doctor posted something the other day to the effect that the area of Ukraine around the Dniepr River is a candidate.

I was a linguistics student a whole lot of years ago, and this was one of the fascinating things taught even then. I'm sure if I think hard enough (or do some Internet research) I can come up with some other words that can be used for relevant geolocation.
