Fume

Postby William A Hupy » Sat May 16, 2020 4:08 pm

A noun and verb. From PIE with many progeny. As a noun meaning vapor, as in perfume. As a verb meaning show anger, such as: Indy Nile was fuming that she was denied entry into the store without a mask.

The PIE, dheu, covers the gamut from Sanskrit to old Prussian.

Interesting that perfumes are usually pleasant, while simple fumes are usually considered noxious or annoying.

Nice one with Indy Nile, by the by. Maybe she can go shopping again now.

Fumaroles also fume, emitting fumes that may or may not be noxious.
