Lukewarm

Postby David Myer » Sat Aug 08, 2020 7:50 am

How cool is Luke?

My feel is that the scale goes: Cold, cool, tepid, lukewarm, warm, hot... But the interest is in the origin of Luke in this usage. The web suggests it comes from lee, the sheltered side. Sounds a bit unlikely to me. Any ideas or answers?

Unlukelee I think as you say.

According to this link:
https://www.wonderopolis.org/wonder/how-hot-is-lukewarm

"Lukewarm actually comes from the Middle English word lukewarme. It was a combination of “luke" and “warm," and the “luke" part was an alteration of the Middle English word lew, which meant tepid."

I don't know, but it sounds authoritative!

A more relevant reference is lukewarm.

A more relevant reference is lukewarm.

Or, with some comments, here on the Agora. Or is that "in" the Agora?
