I am always very intrigued by short words, and how they relate to other languages. The link of owl to "die Eule" (German) or "de uil" (Dutch) is clear, but what about the French "le hibou"?

I don't know about the French, but in PIE languages it seems this one's actually onomatopoeic. Or onomatopoetic, as you wish. Maybe the French just hear things differently?
