Drastic

Postby David Myer » Thu Apr 22, 2021 8:07 pm

I wonder if others have been operating under the same misunderstanding as I have all my life? I thought drastic was necessarily a bad thing. But when I read today that before the recent surge in cases in India there had been a drastic drop in the number..., I was moved to look it up. I didn't believe that a drastic change could be good one. But of course it can.

I can't say that I have had the same thought. I can see why you would, though, as drastic measures are more often required in drastic situations, and those are usually bad.

On a fun(?) note, dictionary.com gives this as an example usage: "A drastic laxative."

Don't mention laxatives. We are in the middle (end) of the most abundant fig season I can recall. The bats, rats and birds have eaten 90% but 10% is way beyond my consumption capabilities.
