Surprised at how many different meanings "crook" now has, I thought it time to suggest it, by hook or by crook.

I was just surprised at how far down the rabbit's hole this one took me.
Croquet, crochet, hockey, lacrosse, links. Okay, they're not all related, but the word crook comes up in ways of describing them all.
Links, for example, is Scottish/Northumbrian for the terrain near a crook in a river, like that around which golf was invented.
