banter

My OED sheds no real light on the etymology of banter. I wonder if you can. To me, it sounds more Irish than London street slang.
Hopefully,

I just took a short wander about the internot and also came up with zip, diddly, nada. (Now, why the heck would my spellcheck want me to capitalize nada?)

Even if it is slang, there ought to be some indication of whence it cometh. Maybe it's the cocky backtalk of a bantamweight little squirt, trying to be bold?
Life is like playing chess with chessmen who each have thoughts and feelings and motives of their own.
