My OED sheds no real light on the etymology of banter. I wonder if you can. To me, it sounds more Irish than London street slang.

Even if it is slang, there ought to be some indication of whence it cometh. Maybe it's the cocky backtalk of a bantamweight little squirt, trying to be bold?
