I see that etymonline says this might be from Phrygian, but we don't really know. I've come across other sources that say it's Greek, but don't explain what the bits mean, merely giving the Greek and translating it as 'elegiac ode or poem'. I'd guess the -legy part is related to 'read', and the e- might be 'ex'. Beyond that I am clueless. Anyone else care to dabble?
