Hassle

Postby bnjtokyo » Sat Feb 19, 2022 4:17 am

I came across "hassle" in some context and thought it might make a good Word of the Day. I checked the GoodWord Dictionary and it isn't listed there and then I searched the entire website to see if it have been suggested before. And lo and behold, I found that M. Henri Day, Grand Panjandrum and name I have not seen for sometime on this site, suggested it way back in 2005

It seems it was never picked up. Mr Day's comment at the link provide a definition and some etymology as does etymonline

Doctor Goodword's Glossary of Quaint Southernism does not include "hassle" but the etymonline suggests in came into use in the southern US. In view of the Gooddoctor's North Carolinian roots, perhaps he would not find it too much of a hassle to look into this word and see if he can discover more? Since the sources cited above state the word came into use in 1945, perhaps he can recall being around at the beginning.

Taken up and treated here.
Life is like playing chess with chessmen who each have thoughts and feelings and motives of their own.
