rematriate

Postby bbeeton » Tue May 17, 2022 3:35 pm

The word "rematriation" appears in an article https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/n ... matriation that deals with the return of seeds for plants associated with native Americans throughout their pre-"Americanization" but lost from their traditional ways through no fault of their own.

It seems to have a meaning equivalent to that of "repatriation", but is more closely connected with traditions than with the return of hostages or belongings.

Probably a relative neologism, it still stems from a distinctly classical tradition.

Most definitely a new coinage. I sent it through the OneLook dictionary, which theoretically searches 1065 on-line dictionaries, and got one hit, to Wiktionary, and that by way of rematriation only, no other forms give anything.

The Wiktionary hit defines it as: "A return to a spiritual way of life with respect for Mother Earth."
Life is like playing chess with chessmen who each have thoughts and feelings and motives of their own.
