spat

Postby bbeeton » Mon Jul 18, 2022 7:40 pm

As a noun, it can mean an insignificant quarrel or disagreement.
It's also the term for immature oysters.
In the plural, a shoe covering over the instep and around the ankle. (It is also the name of a restaurant and pub in Providence, RI.)

As a verb, it is the past tense of "spit".

Is a spat the same as a gaiter in its ankle wrapping meaning, I wonder?

I think spats and gaiters are related, but different. Gaiters are taller, and, if I remember correctly, cover part of a trouser leg, to protect it from brush when walking in rough territory. At some point, spats were probably functional, but in more recent times, tend to be mostly decorative, and just a bit affected

I must take this opportunity to remind people of a wonderful irregular Latin verb.

Spito, spitere, hocktui, splatum

 :?
