Snack
Snack
When I started researching "snack" I expected it to be derived from Yiddish, which provides the basis for so many of our borrowed English words. Rather, it's Middle English, originally in the sense of 'snap' or 'bite.' It's derived from a Middle Dutch word spelled the same with the same meaning. Senses relating to food date from the late 17th century, according to my dictionary.

Re: Snack
Yes, interesting one. And is 'snag', a sausage, related I wonder?
