Demeanour

Postby David Myer » Sat Aug 13, 2022 12:09 am

I like this word because it doesn't seem to follow any familiar pattern. Also its meaning is hard to define - it is somehow bigger than just bearing or presence. And for me at least, it has no obvious etymology to guide my thinking.

Of course I explored the Goodword Suggestions to see if it has come up before and the only reference is under Debbymoge's excellent suggestion for Contumelious.

Perhaps the Good Dr would like to explore one or other or both of these words for us?

You mean like this?

I expect you got misled due to the British U.
Life is like playing chess with chessmen who each have thoughts and feelings and motives of their own.

Thanks Slava. Of course I was beaten by the elipsed u. I had no idea that anyone allowed it to be spelt without the penultimate u - even Americans. I suppose I should have guessed.
