We used this word in British Standards, when I were a lad. As I recall from my time in the flooring game (vinyls and suchlike), in order to conform to standards of flexibility, flooring materials had to fold round a half inch (or maybe a one inch) spandrel without cracking (at a certain temperature). A spandrel was simply a circular, (usually) wooden, rod (or spindle?) of a specified diameter.

But I am talking 50+ years ago, so I may have got it completely wrong!
