An alphabet is "a set of letters or symbols in a fixed order, used to represent the basic sounds of a language." Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics, among other writing systems, does not have an alphabet, since the writing is pictorial and represents language at a word or syllable level.
Our word alphabet is ultimately derived from the first two letters of the Hebrew and Greek alphabets: 'aleph-bet and alpha-beta. However, English filched the word from the Latin alphabetum in the early 16th century.
