Pothole

Postby William A Hupy » Sun Feb 19, 2023 11:24 am

I just started reading a biography of Josiah Wedgwood. In it the author claims pothole comes from the English proclivity to dig clay found in roads to process ceramic pots, thus leaving behind a pothole. Just thought I’d share this.

Smacks a wee bit of folk etymology to me.

There are also kettle holes, formed by accumulations of gravel and other sediment around detached chunks of glacier that later melted. These are present in a number of states in the northern U.S., along the southern edge of the glacier that covered the area during the last ice age. These days, kettle holes are often filled with water and appreciated as lakes; Minnesota has thousands of examples.
